industryweek.com

At a rally in April 2016 Presidential Nominee Trump stated, “Don’t believe those phony numbers when you hear 4.9% and 5% unemployment; the numbers probably 28, 29, as high as 35 in fact I even heard recently 42%.

According to the U.S. Labor Department before Trump took office in January 2017 unemployment was 4.8%; adding 227,000 positions added that month. Trump made amply clear in his campaign that he doesn’t care for the way that government agencies and mainstream economists summarize the state of the job market; however he did agree with the February 2017 numbers of 4.7 unemployement which used the exact same formula the U.S. Labor Department has used for over 30 years.
